Summary:
Is the relationship between wealth and democracy something that we truly understand? Throughout human history, it has been challenging for a nation to achieve both of these at the same time – only a few countries have pulled it off. However, the places that have succeeded did see strong economic growth with their transition to democracy. The link between wealth and democracy seems solid, but does mean the path to wealth requires a move towards democracy? After reviewing the popular "modernization theory," this lecture explains that while economic development is often associated with democratic stability, wealth alone does not guarantee democratization. It shows that only a small number of countries have become both wealthy and democratic, and that strong institutions and political stability are crucial in shaping these outcomes.
