Summary:
"In Riding into History, Amy Nathan draws on several years of personal conversations with Sarah Keys Evans alongside extensive historical and legal research to present a biography of Evans and her central role in the struggle for civil rights. A member of the Women's Army Corps, Evans was arrested in 1952 in Roanoke Rapids, NC for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a bus, three years before Rosa Parks was arrested in Alabama for the same offense. Today, a monument in Roanoke Rapids; Martin Luther King Jr. Park honors Evans and her pursuit of justice. Often overlooked in typical accounts of the Civil Rights era, Keys Evans' arrest and court case served as a crucial landmark in the fight to end segregation on public transportation. The book is comprised of several interwoven stories of Keys Evans' life, from her early childhood in Washington, NC through her participation in the movement to end Jim Crow policies, closing with a chapter containing brief accounts of some of the other men and women who took stands against transportation segregation from the mid-19th century onward"-- Provided by publisher.
