Summary:
Based on an impressive variety of documentary sources and in his own political experience, historian Carlos Pabón Ortega elaborates a rigorous intellectual history of the Puerto Rican left from the 1960s and the creation of the MPI to the present with the emergence of Alianza de País. In his research, the author unveils a critical look at addressing the main debates, tensions and contradictions between various parties, unions and movements while problems of dogmatic practices and premises that led time and again to political defeats over time. Without denying colonial domination, Pabón Ortega shows us how the invocation of socialism has rather been an instrumental way for independence nationalism. To the lack of harmony with popular demands and concerns, the various Puerto Rican lefts have added the impossibility of warning of the identification of the middle and low sectors with American modernity, the inability to imagine the state beyond its coercive mechanisms, the obsession with conceiving an enlightened vanguard, sympathy with Latin American authoritarian regimes such as Cuban, and constant sectarian, messianic and moral superiorist attitudes. Faced with the current lack of expectations for the future, this book is an obligatory reading to invite us to formulate new paradigms alternative to capitalism that do not dispense with the very historicity of the rich experience of the left.
