Summary:
The principal character is a stockbroker's wife and the main theme is the possible break-up of her marriage. Ostensibly conventional but of keen intellect in situations she is a person whose paradox is well worth investigating. Many subsidiary events jostle with the main narrative, and all is combined to give an authentic provincial atmosphere in depth going back into the past where this is relevant. Diverse subjects such as pornography, education, and the preservation of an old railway line are all woven into the complete fabric. An attempt - it is hoped successful - is made to record the real atmosphere of an office. There are many venues however. Also, there are many characters and none of these lack convincing detail. The stockbroker himself has partners.
