- Firm founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989) in 1920. Steloff initially sold corsets at Frederick Loeser's department store, but began her 75-year career selling books by working part time for a Christmas book table in 1907. After working for a number of booksellers she opened her own firm with a stock of 200 books at 128 West 45th Street. Because of her proximity to the theater district she soon specialized in theater, dance, and costumes. After the expansion of her stock and her marriage to David Moss in 1923 she moved the firm to 47th Street. The shop often served as a literary gathering place. Steloff was a founding member of the James Joyce Society; She also occasionally published books. -- Dickinson, Donald C. Dictionary of American antiquarian bookdealers (Westport: Greenwood Press, 1998). In 1967 Steloff sold the firm to Andreas Brown, but continued working as a consultant. Brown moved the firm to 16 East 46th Street and renamed it Gotham Book Mart & Gallery in 2004. Brown fell behind in rent in 2006, the landlords started eviction proceedings. The city marshall seized the inventory and auctioned it off May 22, 2007; a representative of the landlords bought it all. In 2008, a portion of the stock was donated anonymously to the University of Pennsylvania. -- "Gotham Book Mart," Wikipedia.org (accessed October 17, 2023).
