"The need for humanistic and existential approaches to psychology is critical in contemporary times, whether considering research, psychotherapy, or broader social and cultural interventions. While challenges to human existence are a perennial reality, the contemporary world is facing heightened risks associated with increased polarization, growing racial tensions, war and other violent conflicts, threats to the future of democracy, and significant environmental threats. Humanistic and existential psychology embody complicated histories that led them to come together with other streams of research and practice as "the third force of psychology". This handbook is divided into two volumes. The second volume focuses on clinical and social applications. In humanistic and existential psychology, it is difficult to distinguish theory and research from practice. Many of the chapters could readily fit in either volume. Volume 2 comprises of two parts: Part I, Psychotherapy, provides comprehensive overviews of essential topics in humanistic and existential psychotherapy. Part II addresses social and systemic applications. Particularly in regard to multicultural and social justice issues, Hoffman et al. (2020b) stated, "Furthermore, we are suggesting that one cannot be multiculturally competent or proficient without engaging in advocacy and/or activism beyond the therapy room".
