- Summary:
- "Wei Xiezhong, pen name Dingyou and Jianghan, is a retired associate researcher from an agricultural college. During the celebration of his 90th birthday, his two-volume memoir, "Entering and Leaving the Qaidam Basin: Memoirs of a Survivor of the Mao Zedong Era, was also officially published. Sixty-eight years ago, before graduating from university, Wei Xiezong published a novel in the magazine *Yuhua*, which ended up being included in his criminal case file. In 1957, he was labeled a rightist and, to avoid "re-education through labor," attempted to flee to Hong Kong. He was arrested in Shenzhen and sentenced to five years in prison for "illegally crossing the border." This opened up a different chapter in his life. He spent two nine-year prison terms at a labor reform farm in Qinghai, and then remained there to work for a total of twenty-two years. At the labor camp, he did all sorts of jobs, from the most arduous land reclamation laborer to statistician, carpenter, surveyor, pharmacist... He learned various survival skills, including going astray. He encountered different types and personalities of prisoners, and the difficult years he spent with them, along with his self-analysis and reflection, brewed the tragicomedy of crime and punishment in this book." - [Summary from source other than Library of Congress]
