The Assyrian nomenclature is a complicated subject. Due to denominational, linguistic, and geographic fragmentation, many terms have been used over the centuries to describe Assyrians. These names include Nestorian and Jacobite (neither of which are accepted by Assyrians today), as well as Syrian, Süryani, and Syriacs. Other names include Chaldean and Assyro-Chaldean. This volume is a compendium of records primarily related to the Chaldeans, also known as Catholic Assyrians. This term should not be confused with Syrian Assyrian Catholics, which split from the Old Syrian Church, also known as the Jacobite Church. The Chaldean Church emerged from the so-called Nestorian Church, also known as the Apostolic Church of the East. Although Assyrians dislike the names Jacobite and Nestorian, historical documents use these terms, so they must still be employed to describe the historical context.
