"In February 2021, The World Health Organization reported the first cases of avian flu in humans. The 2014-2015 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak in the U.S. is the largest animal health emergency in the country's history. In less than six months, over 48 million birds on 223 premises in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest were affected by the virus and destroyed. As of 2025, H5N1 avian influenza outbreak continues to affect wild birds and some poultry farms in the U.S."
