Summary:
Combined daybooks and journals kept by William O'Gorman as Overseer of the Poor in Newtown, Queens, New York. Daily entries provide a detailed record of O'Gorman's daily accounts and activities, including descriptions of visits to potentially needy cases, meetings with fellow officials, the circumstances and history of individual cases, relief and services provided, his distrust of some supplicants and compassion for others, efforts to place ill or orphaned people in institutions or private homes, visits to the poorhouse, burials of paupers, etc. Some entries relate to the licensing of liquor dealers, and prosecution of those who operated without licenses. Also included are clippings from the local newspaper containing articles and notices regarding town finances and the Overseers of the Poor. This volume also contains mathematical exercises and notes on English and Greek grammar
