Summary:
Words and Things is a celebration of writing on art published by Fruitmarket over the gallery's fifty-year history. Art historical scholarship by the world's leading thinkers on art is brought together with artists' writings and in-conversations, punctuated by poems and short stories. This volume creates space for its reader to reflect upon what it means to write about and alongside art, and how words and things can create a rich pendulum of thought, with text elucidating object and vice versa. The selected texts represent the diversity of Fruitmarket's programme of Scottish and international contemporary artists. From painting to performance, sculpture to film, this book captures the way in which contemporary art can help us think through the pressing social and political issues of our times, but also offer space to experience material artworks as 'present tense things' in the words of Emma Hart and Dean Kenning. The best writing on art conjures this materiality and captures 'the magic inside the process of making something' that Tacita Dean talks about in her conversation with Hal Foster. Fruitmarket publications are often originally produced on a short print-run, and in republishing seminal texts from the gallery's history this volume makes them available to a new generation of readers.
