- Summary:
- "Liberating Spiritualities explores human spirituality as a socially transformative praxis. The book foregrounds the work of six exemplary, though largely understudied, twentieth-century liberation thinkers from across the Americas: Marxist philosopher José Carlos Mariátegui, educator and philosopher Paulo Freire, constructive theologian Virgilio Elizondo, cultural and feminist theorist Gloria Anzaldúa, mujerista theologian Ada María Isasi-Díaz, and ecofeminist theologian Ivone Gebara. Though these visionaries vary widely in terms of their own religious commitments, they share a common critique of colonial Christendom, they take a preferential option for the poor, and they value spirituality as an integral quality of human experience. Tirres's groundbreaking transdisciplinary study mobilizes liberationist and pragmatic insights to illuminate how these organic intellectuals creatively interweave spirituality, social activism, and intelligence in a manner that is nonreductive, emergentist, and relational. The result is a fresh and highly original interpretation of six preeminent socially-engaged thinkers whose work remains ever relevant for our world today"-- Provided by publisher.
