Biography/History:
Dr. John Raymond Brobeck (1914-2009) was an emeritus professor of physiology, a former member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Science, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a member and former president of the American Physiological Society. From 1963 to 1972 he was the chairman of the editorial board of the journal Physiological Reviews . Dr. Brobeck was an active member of the Faculty Club (now the University Club at Penn) and served as the president of their Board of Governors from 1969 to 1971. Dr. Brobeck was born on April 12, 1914 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to parents James Alexander Brobeck and Ella Violetta Johnson. He earned a B.S. in 1936 at Wheaton College, a Ph.D. in neuroanatomy in 1939 from Northwestern University, and an M.D. in 1943 from Yale University. He was a member of the faculty of Yale University Medical School from 1942 to 1952, which was followed by his appointment as chairman of the Physiology Department in the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. Dr. Brobeck held the position of chair until 1970, when he was appointed the Herbert S. Rorer Professor of Medical Sciences, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. Despite his retirement, Dr. Brobeck was granted emeritus status and continued to serve the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant to the Vice President for Health Affairs, as a member of the Special Committee to Review the University's Guidelines on Open Expression, and as Penn's Judicial Administrator from 1989 to 1993. Dr. Brobeck died on March 6, 2009 at the age of 94.
Summary:
All material is arranged alphabetically, unless otherwise noted. The John R. Brobeck papers are organized into two series: I. Yale University Medical School, and II. University of Pennsylvania. The Yale Medical School series covers the early years of Dr. Brobeck's career at Yale, from 1942 to 1952. The series largely contains his teaching materials, such as syllabi, class rosters, exams, exercises, and schedules, but it also contains some general departmental committee records and other files that reflect his work as a member of the faculty. The University of Pennsylvania series covers the bulk of Dr. Brobeck's career from 1952 to 2000. It is organized into six subseries that reflect the variety of roles he held during his time at Penn and each is described below. A. Centers and Institutes This subseries contains committee records, primarily agendas, minutes, reports, memoranda, and correspondence, that were tasked with advising on or evaluating the work of the following centers or institutes: The Advanced Technology Center of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Ben Franklin Technology Center), the Center of Oral Health Research, the Institute of Biological Sciences, the Kline Center (C. Mahlon Kline Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center), the Monell Center (Monell Chemical Senses Center), and the Obesity Center (Behavior Center). Generally speaking, the records are concerned with collaborative work with these organizations or their relationship to Penn. B. Committees, Councils, and Task Forces This subseries contains minutes, reports, correspondence, and other related material from the numerous committees, councils, and task forces on which Dr. Brobeck served. Many of the records relate directly to one of the four health related schools at Penn: The School of Dentistry, The School of Medicine, The School of Nursing, and the School of Veterinary Medicine. Other committees represented here include a special committee that reviewed the University's guidelines on open expression, a committee that considered the future of the School of Allied Medical Professions, the Faculty Club Board of Governors, on which Dr. Brobeck served as president, and an ad-hoc committee that considered, and then recommended, the adding of students to the University Council. C. Vice-President of Health Affairs These records reflect Dr. Brobeck's work as the assistant to the Vice President for Medical Affairs, a position responsible for the University's Medical Division, which oversaw the affairs of the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing, as well as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Brobeck appears to have served as assistant from about 1970 to 1984, so it is presumed that earlier material dated from 1955 to 1969 was carried over from previous years. The records include reports, studies, planning documents, conference materials, surveys, correspondence and memorandum that are mostly of a high-level administrative nature. D. Subject Files This subseries is organized around what appears to have been Dr. Brobeck's general office files. The files span his entire career at Penn from 1951 to 1997, and generally reflect his work as a teacher, researcher, and administrator in the Physiology Department of the School of Medicine. The subseries contains notes, correspondence, teaching materials, department records, publications, and ephemera. E. Provost's Staff Conferences This subseries is a set of agendas, minutes, and notes from the regular meetings (often weekly or semi-weekly) of the Provost's Staff Conference, including a smaller amount of related correspondence and memorandum. It is arranged chronologically, from 1972 to 2000. Generally speaking, the files include the material submitted for the meetings from the "Health Division" that covered the affairs of the related medical schools. F. University Judicial System [RESTRICTED] From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Brobeck served as Judicial Administrator for the University Judicial System, which oversees student disciplinary matters. These files document formal investigations into student conduct and are restricted for 75 years following date of creation. Depending on the case, they are closed until at least 2064 and as late as 2068.
