The charge was in connection with an attempt to arrest Noah Buley, Nelson Ford, Joshua Hammond and George Hammond on a warrant issued under the Fugitive Slave Law, claiming them as slaves of Edward Gorsuch of Maryland.

"To which is added an appendix containing the laws of the United States on the subject of fugitives from labor, the charges of Judge Kane to the grand juries in relation thereto and a statement of the points of law decided by the court during the trial."
