- Summary:
- Norban is a ready-made garments company in Bangladesh that follows an export-import business model and has successfully produced finished goods from raw materials. The company owns its factory, situated on the outskirts of the country's capital, and exports its clothing to well-known companies and brands in the United States and Europe. Norban's focus on quality and timely operations has enabled it to stay in business since 1990 despite numerous crises. However, Bangladesh's foreign reserves have recently affected payment for primary commodities, disrupting the entire supply chain cycle, affecting every industry worldwide, and hindering Norban's export-import operations. Due to Norban's inability to open a letter of credit and obtain raw materials promptly, the company experienced a delay in production and consecutively in delivery of the orders. Also, the increased dollar value made the procurement of raw materials costly, along with the already inflated prices in Bangladesh due to the Russia-Ukraine war. In addition to the losses incurred due to the elevated cost of raw materials and the decline in order quantity, inventory management was also an issue; since the decline in global demand, many orders had been postponed, and many were only partially accepted. This case aims to explore the difficulties the textile industry is encountering due to the financial crisis and explore ways to overcome the crisis by providing in-depth knowledge of the difficulties Norban encountered.
