- Summary:
- Cyclo Fibers, a Bangladesh-based business enterprise, has been addressing waste management and working toward a more sustainable ready-made garment (RMG) industry in the country. Bangladesh's RMG sector, which began in the 1970s, is now the second-largest RMG exporter in the world, with about 5,000 garment factories in the country as of 2021. Unfortunately, this industry is also one of the heaviest waste producers in Bangladesh, reported to generate 577,000 tons of industrial waste each year. However, a significant portion of this waste (approximately 250,000 tons) comes in the form of 100% recyclable cotton debris with a value of around USD 500 million annually. Cyclo Fiber's circular business model starts with procuring industrial waste from manufacturers, recycling it, converting it into high-quality and sustainable yarn, and delivering it back to manufacturers. The manufacturers then utilize this material to produce new clothing items and sell them to buyers. However, questions remain as to whether Cyclo will be able to survive in the Bangladesh RMG market and reshape it into a more sustainable one.
