Summary:
Leatherina Pvt Ltd. (LPL) is a small and medium-sized factory which produces leather bags, backpacks, and accessories. LPL was founded in 2016 by Ms. Taslima Miji, a Bangladeshi entrepreneur. The company is currently located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is one of the reputed small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the leather goods manufacturing industry of Bangladesh, and complies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, especially SDG 12, which involves sustainable production and consumption. The factory employs 45-50 workers, most of whom are women who are unskilled and illiterate or semiliterate. Therefore, Ms. Miji has had to provide expensive training to turn these employees into skilled ones. The organization was operating with a good reputation among local and international buyers and making good revenue in the first few years of business. However, due to a lack of employee performance and sincerity towards SDGs, it was facing difficulties keeping existing and new buyers satisfied. This case study offers students the opportunity to explore how a woman entrepreneur, Ms. Miji, overcomes the challenges of transforming unskilled workers (especially women employees) into skilled ones in the leather goods production factory. The case study also highlights the processes whereby Ms. Miji's right trainer selection, visual presentation of SDGs, and other approaches helped her transform her employees into skilled and well-performing human resources. Students are asked to assess the efficacy of Ms. Miji's empathetic leadership approach in guiding an unskilled workforce towards a skilled one.
