Summary:
Video game competitions have been around since the earliest arcade and pinball machines in the 1970s and gained widespread familiarity in the 1980s. Still, these competitions and other niche events pale in comparison to the organization and economic power of the tournaments and leagues that have ascended in the 2010s and 2020s. This case study will focus heavily on the Overwatch League and the collection of Counter Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship events as a means to examine the factors that have propelled esports into the mainstream and have contributed to their financial success. The components under review are branding, sponsorships, gambling, city and regional ties, league organization, competitors' dual roles as influencers, and lastly, the broadcasting and live event aspects of esports. In evaluating the importance of esports, students will be asked to identify how value is created in competitive esports.
