Summary:
For the majority of Classical Period Greece (510-323 BCE), women were rarely permitted to display themselves or their feelings to the public sphere. Although women were usually not seen as the decision-makers and leaders of the public sphere, they were crucial in the private sphere of life, more specifically religion and ritual practices. Depicted through both material culture and literary sources, women were imperative to understanding and determining the will of the gods. Acting as a channel between the mortal realm and the divine, priestesses and oracles worked as some of the first political risk consultants, holding a considerable amount of influence in the religious and therefore political domain. With the power to essentially see the future, the Pythia, or Oracle of Delphi, was seen as the authoritative leader in political decision-making, thus placing her in a position that offered practical counsel that could shape future actions. During times of risk, or a situation that could possibly expose individuals to danger in extreme cases, the Pythia was used as a resource to ensure the risk was treated effectively. From this case study, students will understand the role women had in high-risk decision-making. Furthermore, students will be able to examine the pros and cons of modern risk assessment, specifically how superstition and gender influence the decision-making process.
