- This case is part of the Indigenous Business Stories Project, a series of freely available cases focusing on Indigenous business. For free access to these cases, please visit https://sk.sagepub.com/cases/series/indigenous-business-stories. In this Indigenous Business Story, Aaron Joe shares lessons that he learned and continues to learn as he develops his business, Salish Soils. Aaron shares his knowledge about working to align one's business with his values that account for his life experience and visions for the future. He expresses the importance of understanding one's business from all angles, finding the right partners, and emphasizes the importance of core competencies like financial literacy and sticking to a vision. Aaron describes the first major turning point in the story of his company when he brought his community's political leader to witness the first successful effort in "churning up black gold" or producing soil from composted waste from local logging and fishing companies. Above all, Aaron highlights how understanding and valuing healing and second chances shape how he honors his employees and their life experiences to foster a sense of connection and belonging through their work at Salish Soils. Aaron shares stories about his company's struggles with debt and proof of concept but ultimately sheds light on a story of success and the power of seeing value beyond what others can. Salish Soils provides the most comprehensive recycling and organic waste disposal solutions in shíshálh, known by its anglicized name as Sechelt, a town in what is now known as the Sunshine Coast Region of the Province of British Columbia, Canada. Salish Soils offers a full-service recycling depot, and it sells soil, mulch, and aggregate products. The company works closely with local municipalities, Indigenous governments, and other partners to deliver the best possible solutions for the needs of the region. Its founder, Aaron Joe, is a member of the Shíshálh Nation; he lives on and operates his business within his home swiya (territory) today.
