In Canada, there continues to be a disparity between rural and urban communities in terms of access to the Internet and other necessary technology. These disparities disproportionately affect Indigenous communities more than others in this country. Mamawapowin Technology Society, led by Bruce Buffalo, set out to address this need in his community of Maskwacis, Alberta. Mamawapowin fought for Maskwacis to have access to the same quality of Internet infrastructure afforded to those living in neighboring cities. This allows people to live and work in their home community, rather than leave to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Through Bruce's interest in technology and drive to bring opportunities to his community, he came up with an innovative solution to bring high-speed connectivity to Maskwacis. His creativity and unique story caught the attention of Al Jazeera, and a documentary was created on Mamawapowin, sharing the story of the digital divide in Canada to a global audience. Mamawapowin attracted several key partnerships and mentors and created a for-profit Internet service provider social enterprise to help fund the non-profit society. Community members moved back to Maskwacis now that remote work opportunities were possible. Mamawapowin Technology Society is no longer in operation; however, it remains a model by which other Indigenous communities can bring connectivity and positive change to their reserve through innovation and partnerships with individuals and organizations who believe in their vision.
