Summary:
There is more to public relations than just explaining the who, what, when, where, and why of a topic. Talking to the press and adequately conveying a message takes training and experience. With experience and skill, it can be easy. However, without knowledge of the ins and outs, it can be as confusing as it is ineffective. This business case centers around Chris, the pastor of a new church, as he talks to a reporter from a local news outlet about the church's first community event. The problem, realized by a church member who has a background in public affairs, is that Chris, despite regularly serving as a public figure and speaker, does not have the media training needed to prepare him for the interview. As the church member watches the interview from nearby, he consistently questions what should have been done differently prior to the interview and how to have Chris better prepared in the future. Students will be asked to analyze the importance of media training and its impact in conveying a message.
