- Hunan KBC Co., Ltd. China (KBC) produces carbon matrix composite materials for use in photovoltaic applications. Due to its single-product structure, Liao, the company's chairperson, diversified the company's core business. However, the introduction of the new products posed numerous challenges for KBC, such as setbacks in R&D and a prolonged period for customer verification. Following an analysis of the opportunities and challenges of KBC implementing a product diversification strategy, this case study challenges students to help Liao overcome the obstacles of the diversification strategy shift. The study also provides recommendations for Chinese innovation-driven small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt a sustainable development trajectory.
