In addition to the benefits provided by the internet and other new technologies, they also provide opportunities for online fraud, which is difficult to track and trace. The wide acceptance of online communication and its anonymity to users is sometimes misused to commit impersonation and fraud. The misrepresented brands and individuals who are targets of such fraud face the quandary of how to deal with it. This case highlights the problems faced by Harvard Business School in simultaneously coping with the need to uphold the institution's reputation, the challenges of standing for justice by pursuing legal action against the online fraud perpetrators, and the ethical dilemmas involved in providing fair treatment to the victims. Protecting an iconic brand and its value systems drives the need to act, but multiple disparate options with unknown outcomes make decision-making difficult.
