Summary:
One of the tenets of leadership theory is the focalization of the leader's actions. In this vein of leadership theory, leaders take on a totalizing perspective. To put it bluntly, leaders lead. They come up with the ideas, they execute them, they reap the rewards. This perspective erases the contributions of followers. Followership theory has pushed back against this view of leadership and significantly reincorporated the contributions of subordinates to the stakes of leadership. But what if we extended followership theory all the way to the top? What if leaders are actually followers?Homer's Iliad provides insights into leadership and followership. In this case study, we re-examine Agamemnon, traditionally considered a leader, through the lens of followership. This case study will flip the script by applying followership theory to leaders, demonstrating that effective leaders are in fact followers. This highlights important aspects of both leadership and followership: leaders are successful when they follow, and followers can also lead when their contributions are acknowledged and incorporated into the decision-leader matrix. Key episodes from Agamemnon's and Nestor's interactions will be examined through the lens of followership and ultimately will lead to a new perspective on one of the epic's most iconic leaders.
