Summary:
This case study explores the leadership of King Harald Fairhair, a Viking leader who has been credited as the first leader to unify what is now known as Norway. The case uses the Icelandic Sagas as the texts from which to draw information about Fairhair's approach to leadership. Students will identify five significant aspects of his leadership by reviewing the sagas and then compare these to contemporary perspectives on leadership. The case explores the facets of effective leadership that were important more than 1,100 years ago and that are still important today. Students are asked to consider whether King Harald Fairhair's leadership would have only been effective during that specific time and place or if it is possible that the aspects of leadership that he exhibited could be considered universal.
