Summary:
Acme Fragrances has a shortage of warehouse space.Their United Kingdom (UK) warehouse is full to capacity and with significant growth expected, the company's management needs to examine a number of options. These options include continuing to operate from their current leased warehouse but creating additional space, adding an additional facility, moving to a new facility, or outsourcing to a logistics services provider.According to the sales and marketing director, newly-arrived stock of finished product from Eastern Europe will have to be stored at a local haulier's warehouse, alongside the raw materials Acme already stores there. However, this solution presents concerns regarding the cleanliness of the facility for the storage of finished goods. The haulier's warehouse has always stored automotive parts and equipment and they are storing Acme's products as a favour to the Acme managing director.Exacerbating the storage problems are issues with exports into European Union countries with export paperwork causing significant delays at the border. Imports of both finished product and raw materials from Eastern Europe are also seeing delays at the ports of exit and entry. These delays result in the need for increased stock-holding of both raw materials and finished goods due to the increased lead time. The lease on the combined manufacturing facility and warehouse has another five years to run; however, there is a break clause in two years' time. The sales and marketing director who is in charge of the project is not in favour of outsourcing the logistics operation at this point in time as he sees Acme's ability to manage this operation in-house as an advantage over its competition. The company has approached a consultancy company to assist them with their future strategy.
