Summary:
This case study examines the leadership style of a retail store manager at Walmart Canada's Kindersley, Saskatchewan, outlet and various sales-boosting strategies. It explores some of the challenges encountered by international retail corporations and the significant impact of managerial styles and decisions on organizational outcomes. During fiscal year 2022, the Kindersley outlet faced difficulties reaching its annual sales target. In response, Alex (a pseudonym), the store manager, called for a meeting three months before the annual sales revenue report submission deadline, inviting other managers to discuss ideas for increasing sales.Walmart Canada partners with a variety of companies, including subsidiary brands under its ownership or control and external companies that are not subsidiaries of Walmart. The revenue generated from the sale of products by non-Walmart subsidiary companies contributes a varying or fluctuating percentage of the profit to Walmart. However, Walmart retains 100% of the profit from its owned products, such as its line of Great Value products. Additionally, Walmart employees are entitled to a share of the profits generated by individual stores if they successfully meet the targeted sales revenue. Staff members at the Kindersley store stand to receive a percentage of revenues up to 13%, depending on their position. For example, if the store fulfills the revenue target and earns CAD 1 million profit, the store manager can receive up to 130,000 CAD as a profit share. Failing to achieve the sales target results in significant losses for the employees. The case study evaluates store manager Alex's leadership in addressing the revenue target challenges. It examines the impact of his strategies on increasing the revenue and profits of the Kindersley outlet. Through a discussion of managerial decisions made while recognizing the decreased sales volume in October 2022, the case underscores the vital role of managers in international retail corporations. The evaluation of Alex's leadership capability and strategic effectiveness provides insights into the challenges faced by retail managers in similar roles. This case study serves as a resource for students seeking to comprehend effective decision-making in achieving organizational goals.
