Summary:
In 2025, Nestlé admitted that one of its subsidiaries, Perrier-a packaged water manufacturer-used unnatural methods to purify its water which were against European Union regulations. An investigation revealed that even officials of Macron's administration were aware of these malpractices which raised questions about the integrity of the French government. The scandal affected the reputation of Nestlé, a global food brand. The company offered to pay a fine of €2 million to avoid legal proceedings but consumer advocacy groups argued that given the scale of malpractices the settlement was insufficient as many consumers were misled into making false purchases. The case discusses the steps Nestlé should undertake to avoid malpractices and rebuild its image as a reliable food brand. At the same time, students should also think about the steps that the government of France should undertake to establish a fair and transparent system.
