Summary:
The aviation industry is fraught with uncertainties, ranging from economic downturns to geopolitical tensions. Finnair, Finland's national airline, faced a critical challenge when Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian airspaces were closed. The closure of Russian airspace was announced on February 28, 2022, as a countermeasure to the European Union's airspace closure. The case study explores how Finnair successfully navigated through many challenges to maintain competitiveness and resilience. Historically, Finnair's geographical advantage made it a preferred carrier for flights between Europe and Asia. However, the airspace closures led to a 40% increase in flying time for these routes, significantly affecting operational costs and customer satisfaction. To adapt, Finnair forged strategic partnerships with airlines such as Qatar Airways and American Airlines and diversified its market focus to include the United States, the Middle East, and additional European cities. Operational challenges were met through intricate route replanning, and careful financial planning mitigated the impact of increased costs. Thus, Finnair experienced a year-over-year increase in passenger numbers and maintained high load factors. As Finnair prepares to confront new challenges in the form of labor strikes, this case requires students to develop a comprehensive risk management plan focused on fuel shortages and other operational risks.
