- Summary:
- Pricemart, a major player and cost leader in the general retail and grocery industry, is considering a move into the natural and organic foods industry. The leader in this segment is Healthmart, whose success has increasingly attracted the attention of Pricemart executives. Healthmart's primary advantage is derived from a focused differentiation strategy, which allows for the retention of customers who pay premium prices. As Pricemart evaluates expansion into this industry segment, a key consideration is how its strategy and organization structure impact the potential for its success. The question is whether Pricemart needs to alter its structure and/or strategy to accommodate the move into natural and organic foods, and if so, whether it is capable of doing so. Students will be asked to compare low-cost and differentiation business-level strategies; discuss the differences between mechanistic and organic organizational structures; describe how structural choices can aid organizations as they pursue a particular strategy; and describe reasons that Pricemart may have difficulty competing directly with Healthmart, in part because of a potential mismatch between structure and strategy.
