Summary:
Flourish's co-founders met at an MBA course at UC Berkeley Haas and-motivated by financial adversity in their own families-aimed to make saving money attainable and rewarding for people who lacked a financial safety net. The company's first product was a mobile app that leveraged gamification to incentivize users to develop and maintain positive financial behavior. In 2020, the company added a product for financial institutions, licensing its technology to banks, fintechs, and credit unions, mostly in Latin America. As Flourish's software gained traction, the founders wondered whether their original direct-to-consumer strategy was the most effective model to meet the company's mission, as they experienced challenges in scaling and monetizing the app. However, because the B2B model focused on large clients, they worried about giving up too much control over how its technology impacted end users on the path to financial wellness. As a small organization, they knew they couldn't invest in both products simultaneously. Therefore, the co-founder grappled with the strategic question of which path would most enable them to fulfill their mission: the direct-to-consumer app or the business-to-business (B2B) product for financial institutions?
