- Summary:
- In this case study, students will be asked to understand the importance of media interviews and learn how to establish talking points strategically before talking to the press. Glenn, the head of public relations for the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) for Charlotte, North Carolina, has established relationships with local reporters and maintains contact regularly, especially when he has news to share or a new campaign to promote. This is why Glenn is not surprised when he receives a call one morning saying that a local TV station has an interview spot that opened last minute and they would like for him to come on to talk about NAMI's newest campaign. Glenn gladly accepts, but the interview comes with a small curveball-it is in two hours. Without enough time to prepare, Glenn quickly begins putting together his messaging and talking points. It is a race against the clock, but it is not an opportunity he is willing to miss. Fortunately for Glenn, there are tips and tricks for adequately preparing for media interviews, even when urgency is required.
