Summary:
Megan Barry was a popular mayor leading Nashville, TN, a city on the rise. She was also the key advocate of a pending transit referendum. Everything seemed to be going her way until she made an announcement at an unscheduled news conference: she had been having an extramarital affair with her police bodyguard. She accepted responsibility and asked for forgiveness. Within days, though, a criminal investigation alleged that taxpayer money was misused in conjunction with her improper relationship. What should the mayor do? Can she continue to effectively promote her political goals, or have her personal problems created such a great distraction that she'll be forced to resign? This critical incident is most appropriate for use in upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level courses in leadership, principles of management, organizational behavior, and business ethics.
