Summary:
This case centers around Ally, a student at a culinary college, who had an anaphylactic reaction to food served at an on campus student-operated dining facility. The students in Ally's class were executing a "pop-up" restaurant that featured classically prepared foods, and invited her to dine there. Ally was concerned about going because she has a multitude of food allergies and must be careful about what she eats so she does not have a reaction. Ally is always prepared when she dines out by bringing a list of her allergies with her to give to the server. In addition, she always carries an EpiPen just in case, and once she gets to the restaurant she checks for the allergy notice that should be in public view. However, during this experience, she had an anaphylactic reaction to nuts that were part of the dessert and had to go to the hospital. This case asks students to identify each of the critical mistakes made by the staff of the pop-up restaurant and to explain how they would have handled the situation differently to prevent the allergic reaction from happening.
