- Summary:
- In response to attacks on its legitimacy, Barclays bank engaged a strategy of sponsoring the arts. Barclays is one of the UK's largest and most successful banks, both domestically and internationally. However, despite - and indeed because of - its size, Barclays faced attacks on its legitimacy during the 1970s and 1980s for various reasons, including its level of profitability and its business activities in South Africa. Using Bourdieusian capital theory as a lens, this case study examines how Barclays engaged strategically in capital exchanges and conversion with leading cultural institutions. The case will explore the key factors that inhibited and facilitated the exchange of capital and the outcomes of these strategies. This case study will be useful for students studying strategy, corporate ethics, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a response to organisational crises of legitimacy, as well as students interested in examining business phenomena using Bourdieusian theory.
