Summary:
Sales of cars at Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) were zero in April 2020 due to COVID-19. To survive the economic crisis, MSI developed an innovative strategy based on a subscription model. Will the same strategy that stabilized the company also foster its growth as the economy recovers? During the pandemic, Indian consumers' purchasing power significantly decreased, especially in high-priced product segments like personal vehicles. At the same time, public transportation was not available. In response, MSI launched Maruti Suzuki Subscribe, a platform of new service offerings, in partnership with a prominent rental and leasing company. The management team is pleased with the results and is beginning to look ahead toward growth as the company emerges from survival mode. The case encourages the students to develop strategies using tools such as the Ansoff Matrix and TOWS-an action-oriented update to the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis-to suggest ways MSI can mitigate impacts on the company due to the crisis in the external environment. The case also highlights the importance of the TOWS and Ansoff Matrix as tools that leaders can use as they formulate strategies to survive and grow, respectively, in times of economic downturn.
