- Summary:
- In India more than 200 million livelihoods are connected (directly or indirectly) to artisan communities with a tribal majority. This case relays the story of a tribal artist who, with the help of Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSP(I)), a non-governmental organization working for the development of poor households, learned to present himself as a successful entrepreneur. Rajubhai, along with his fellow villagers, used to work for other people as a bamboo artist employee but he was not happy with the returns (respect, salary, and self-satisfaction) he was given. He always wanted to start his own business and develop employment opportunities in the village itself in an effort to reduce the stress of migration and boost the income of every individual. His dream came true with the support of AKRSP(I), and he started his own business supplying bamboo products in local and urban markets. Gradually, the demand for his products started increasing, and he employed his neighbours to work in his unit and provided them with a decent salary. Today he is a role model and is still working hard to bring the migration level in his village to zero percent.
