- Summary:
- Within the last two centuries, the performance of classical music in American concert halls and opera houses has led to a misrepresentation of what classical music is in the sight of American audiences. Through the lens of what is performed on these stages, the audience becomes educated and, in some ways, manipulated to define classical music based on where it is being performed and not on the art form itself. This current practice has been used for years by the elite and people in power, who, from a capitalist mindset, have been the major audience and decision-makers regarding what can be performed on the stages. Only recently has that audience changed, and a new approach to defining classical music has begun. This case seeks to begin the discussion about how classical music has been defined, who ultimately defines classical music, and how we as Americans begin to settle into what American classical music is without giving so much power and emphasis to the Western Canon. Readers will analyze the issues related to socioeconomic status within the realm of classical music by considering the perspective of the audience.
