- Summary:
- Brian Cornell, CEO of Target Corp (Target), faced DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) challenges after the U.S. Supreme Court, in June 2023, reversed affirmative action-based admission in colleges and universities. In August 2023, senators asked the company to revisit its DEI goals that sounded like filling hiring quotas with a certain percentage of minorities, such as black employees and suppliers across various Target ranks. Target also irked customers by marketing LGBTQ+ products to children, which resulted in boycotts and, ultimately, the filing of lawsuits by shareholders. The customer backlash resulted in Target losing USD 10 billion off its stock market value within 10 days, the most significant stock price decline in the corporation's history. While Cornell valued diversity because it made business sense to him, there was anticipation by legal experts that post-Supreme Court judgment on affirmative action, diversity roles could receive more scrutiny from different stakeholders, including lawmakers, shareholders, and even employees. This case looks at how Cornell can resolve Target's DEI challenges.
