Summary:
In India more than 200 million livelihoods are connected (directly or indirectly) to artisan communities with tribal majorities. Crafting also encompasses micro, small, medium, and large enterprises. This case relates the story of a tribal artist named Arvindbhai who developed his skills as a successful entrepreneur with the help of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSP(I))-a non-government organization working for the development of poor households. Arvindbhai used to work as a schoolteacher, but he lost his job during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is when he realized that gaining more skills would give him more opportunities to be paid. He joined a bamboo workshop as an artisan laborer and worked there for more than two years. Later, he planned to start his own business, but lack of financial resources was the biggest challenge to achieving this goal. He approached many institutions and finally his dream came true with the support of AKRSP(I), and he started his own business where he supplied bamboo products at local and urban markets. Gradually the demand for his products started increasing, and he employed not only himself but was also able to offer laborers in his village a decent salary. Today he is a role model and is still working hard to bring the migration level of his village to zero.
