- Summary:
- This case explores the challenges and backlash organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games faced after the games' opening ceremony. Students will examine the issues that organizers faced and assess how Situational Crisis Communication Theory was applied to inform their response. Organizers planned an "ambitious" event, promising to create one of the "most memorable moments in Olympics history." The 4-hr ceremony was successful in garnering attention and creating a response from different parts across the world, but, unfortunately for organizers, this included backlash from some members of the Christian faith. The ceremony involved drag queens and promoted universal love, with the climax of the ceremony featuring a short song from a man painted blue from head to toe to emulate the Greek god of wine, Dionysus. As he sang to promote opposition to war, some members of the Christian community alleged that the scene was an intentional mockery of Leonardo di Vinci's painting "The Last Supper," which portrays a pivotal moment in the leadup to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as told in the New Testament. This case breaks down how organizers responded and how this crisis affected the next 19 days of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
