Summary:
Based on inbound theorizing from sociology and anthropology, this case study introduces a new conceptualization of the business family. The successful creation and continuation of a business family can be considered as an outcome of a process and not as a pre-existing entity. Following such a conceptualization, kin relations and the joint ownership of the family business are important foundations that support processes of doing family but do not replace them. In the processes of doing family, several instruments are important, including narratives, interaction, rituals, and the creation of a social memory. They allow for the establishment of cohesion and transgenerationality. The results are shown and described on the basis of an old and successful business family from Germany.
