- Summary:
- While most people agree on the power of effective leadership, defining effective leadership can be difficult. There are several popular styles of leadership (servant, authentic, transformational, visionary, contingent, etc.), yet there is no agreed-upon definition of an effective leader. Many notable leaders portray different qualities and characteristics. Leadership, therefore, can be a confusing and elusive term. And if defining effective leadership is difficult, putting it into practice is even more so. This case explores an MBA student as he sets out to be an effective leader when he takes on the role of MBA Society President. Justin Knibbe's goal was to be known as the best president that the society had ever had. But on a brisk November morning after serving for seven months, he had no choice but to quit the position that he had coveted. He immediately questioned his decision and wondered if he should undo it. Students are challenged to look at Justin's leadership style and evaluate what went wrong in his role as president of the MBA Society. MBA programs value and cultivate leaders, but the role of an effective leader is not always clear. This intimate look at failed leadership will help students to define leadership and provide recommendations for practicing effective leadership.
