- Summary:
- Maria-Elena Santos was transferred to Sydney, Australia, to lead a multi-national sales and marketing team. As a high-potential manager who has been on the fast-track and has carefully managed her career, Santos is excited to add a critical international assignment to her resume and confident about her ability to successfully complete the assignment. She is replacing a beloved manager who had taken great pains to build a cohesive and effective team. Santos jumps into action without much help from her boss and is focused on the task while the team continues to perform well. However, she does not pay much attention to the many cultural challenges that the diverse team members face and which contribute to lack of full contribution from several team members, with two requesting a transfer. She also fails to understand the organizational culture and ignores the processes necessary to build an effective team. The case concludes with Santos receiving positive feedback regarding team performance during her first informal three-month review, but she is surprised that she is asked to consider the issue of organizational fit and the various comments regarding her behavior from her team members.
