Summary:

Joe was experiencing a mid-career crisis that prompted him to change jobs by becoming a sales representative in the pharmaceuticals industry. Tony, a high-performing colleague, took Joe under his wing as a mentor and the relationship seemed to provide useful guidance, at least initially. Soon, however, Joe became uncomfortable with the constant probing into matters that had nothing to do with the work itself. Tony emerged as a toxic presence that potentially posed a threat to Joe's position in the company. In response, Joe endeavored to distance himself from Tony, but this strategy backfired horribly. Tony possessed a narcissistic personality that craved adulation and could not tolerate rejection. Such individuals lack a moral compass and have no hesitation in destroying someone professionally as well as personally. Tony followed this path, leaving Joe in jeopardy of losing his job as well as his marriage. While Joe was able to salvage both, it took a questionable tactic by his boss to remove Tony from the office. The case calls into question how dysfunctional personalities can be dealt with in the workplace and evaluates options managers can explore to handle them.
