This case explores market demand and its impact on wage, and examines labor market discrimination in the context of this wage theory. The 2023/2024 Women's NCAA Basketball season saw record viewership, and interest has, thus far, carried over into the 2024 Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) season. Further, this increase in demand seems to be tied primarily to one player - Caitlin Clark, who recently became the NCAA career points leader (men's or women's) before being drafted first overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Despite capturing the nation's attention, Clark's rookie salary is a fraction of what a male rookie could expect to earn in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This case will explore economic theory concerning the rationale for a fair market wage and why fair market wages might differ, and discuss instances of when wages may (unfairly) differ due to discrimination.
