- Summary:
- In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, work managers experienced a spike in anxiety-afraid of a dramatic drop in efficiency among workers as they moved from corporate to home offices. Rapidly developing "bossware" technology (e.g. keystroke and attention tracking, wearable tech, video recording) was adopted to ensure output remained consistent. Companies offering these technologies touted their advantages to justify their widespread adoption. Foremost among them were a few instances in which a company's bottom line improved considerably. However, before accepting these tools as the next major innovation in management, a few issues should be considered. Employee reactions are often difficult to anticipate. Some, like growing worries over stifled dissent and fears of data breaches, are predictable. Others, like anti-theft software spurring dramatic improvements in service delivery, or monitoring programs that trigger increases in rule breaking, are harder to explain. Furthermore, employees retain the right to quit if office policies ignore their concerns. This case study examines the trade-offs that both companies and employees should consider when determining office policies. It also explores key questions around which these negotiations should engage.
