- Summary:
- The case examines how, in 2023, Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano-Reggiano (CdFP-R), a consortium of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese manufacturers in Italy, tried to combat counterfeit products using blockchain-backed microchips. Given the global demand for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, counterfeiting was a critical issue that became more widespread due to the lack of trademark protection in international countries. Accordingly, some brands from countries like the United States also labeled their hard cheese as Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, which CdFP-R objected to; however, given the geographical limitations of trademark protection, it had no effect. Could blockchain technology prove to be superior to other anti-counterfeit methods? Are companies like Kraft Heinz misusing Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese terminology?.
