- Summary:
- Shivanna, an educated young adult, was worried about the challenging circumstances of the agricultural activities of his father, who had been involved in millet cultivation for more than a decade. Through his college friend, who happened to be from the nearby area and has a similar farming background in paddy cultivation, Shivanna learned about support systems such as farmer producer organizations (FPO) and financial assistance provided by a well-known non-governmental organization (NGO). Also, the knowledge and capacity-building programs and social support initiatives undertaken by the NGO help farmers bring more professionalism to agriculture practices. By benefiting from these types of supportive facilities, Shivanna has made his father's millet cultivation a part of a successful millet value-added products brand. Students will be asked to evaluate the advantages for farmers of associating with the FPO rather than being an independent farmer.
